Lent begins.

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.

Lord, draw us closer to You throughout these next special weeks. Help us to sacrifice and serve in ways that we aren't used to. Help us to guide our children and ignite within them a fire for Your path--the one of Mortification, True Peace, and Truth. Break us down so that You can build us up in You. We love You.

Amen.

Is what you give up for lent something you are supposed to keep quiet about, like fasting?? I was thinking I should give up being critical...then I thought I should stick to something like chocolate... but giving up chocolate isn't as pure a sacrifice because it is connected with weight and vanity... the scariest sacrifice altogether would be to give up dieting with the knowledge that my weight could go completely out of control... I guess I am a little bit slow deciding. Lent was never emphasized in the protestant church that I grew up in. I actually thought I was having some sort of hallucination when I saw several people with ashes on their foreheads two years ago in Pittsburgh. I had never heard of that ritual before. Never once on the west coast have I seen it.
